Bases biologiques de la production de deux Mollusques d'intérêt économique: reproduction chez Megathura crenulata, reproduction et développement chez Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Cannuel, Rozenn.
The reproductive cycle of Megathura crenulata was documented and quantification of oocyte lipid reserves with lipo-specific stains was explored in both this species and in Crassostrea gigas. The necessity of providing food to female broodstock C. gigas in spring was re-evaluated, because subsequent larval and post-larval rearing performance was not affected by broodstock starvation during conditioning. Developmental study of the organs responsible of particle processing in C. gigas allowed the identification of critical stages related to the ontogenesis of each organ, as well as a better understanding of the evolution of these organs, highly-modified in the Ostreidae. Ciliary type identification and mucocyte mapping from post-larval to adult stage showed...

Biologia alimentar de Steindachnerina brevipinna (Characiformes, Curimatidae) do rio Ibicuí-mirim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Giora,Júlia; Fialho,Clarice B..
The feeding biology of Steindachnerina brevipinna (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) is described based on specimens collected in the Ibicuí-Mirim river, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from April 2001 to March 2002. Diet description is based on the analysis of the frequency of occurrence and index of dietary importance of the ingested items. The monthly variation of stomach repletion, hepatosomatic and intestinal indexes was also analyzed. Major feeding activity occurred before (May, June and July 2001) the reproductive period, with the hepatosomatic index values showing similar variation along the year. Both the mean intestinal quotient and the analysis of the main ingested items (Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta algae) indicate a detritivorous diet.

Biology of Chirocentrodon bleekerianus (Poey, 1867) (Clupeiformes: Pristigasteridae) in a continental shelf region of southern Brazil BABT
Corrêa,Carlos Eduardo; Chaves,Paulo de Tarso; Guimarães,Paulo Ricardo Bittencourt.
This study provides information on the biology of C. bleekerianus from Paraná State coast, Brazil, assembling data about its abundance, size structure, diet and reproduction. Monthly collections were accomplished in 1999 and 2000 in the internal continental shelf, with trawl net. The catch-per-unit-effort did not vary significantly among the seasons. In the summer, the individuals were larger, followed by autumn, spring and winter. C. bleekerianus was predominantly planktivorous and the most frequent items in its diet were copepods followed by diatomaceous algae. Seasonal variation in the frequency values of the gonad maturation stages, gonadossomatic index and gonadal condition factor indicated that the reproductive period encompassed spring and summer....

Bird-termite interactions in Brazil: A review with perspectives for future studies Biota Neotropica
de Vasconcelos,Marcelo Ferreira; Hoffmann,Diego; de Araújo,Mércia Caroline; Vasconcelos,Prinscila Neves.
We present a review on the principal interactions between birds and termites in Brazil. We found 218 bird species feeding on termites or using termitaria for nesting or perching. Termites were mentioned as food source for 179 bird species. Alates were the most consumed caste. Termitaria were mentioned as nest site for 45 bird species. Some bird species also perch on the top of termite mounds to search for their prey or to conduct territorial and/or courtship displays. Considering all interactions between both animal groups, little is known about the identification of termite genera or species. Therefore, we suggest more detailed studies to be conducted on the natural history and ecology of interactions between birds and termites in Brazil.

Bivalve genomics ArchiMer
Saavedra, Carlos; Bachere, Evelyne.
Interest in bivalve genomics has emerged during the last decade, owing to the importance of these organisms in aquaculture and fisheries and to their role in marine environmental science. Knowledge of bivalve genome structure, function and evolution resulting from 20th century "single gene" approaches is limited, but genomic technologies are called to dramatically increase it. Research based on linkage maps, transcriptomics and proteomics is being carried out to study the genetic and molecular bases of traits of interest in bivalve farming industry, mainly disease susceptibility, tolerance to environmental stress, and growth. The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is now the focus of an international genome-sequencing consortium. The use of bivalves in...

Características ecológicas del pulpito Octopus Tehuelchus en tres ambientes del golfo San Matías OceanDocs
Storero, L.P..
Coastal marine ecosystems are highly variable and the inherent biotic and abiotic factors of these environments can influence the bio-ecological characteristics of the living cephalopods. The presence of the small octopus “pulpito” Octopus tehuelchus in the coastal environments of San Matías Gulf has been exploited by artisanal fishermen for more than 60 years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the variations in the life cycle of the pulpito, and the factors that could account for these variations in three different coastal environments of San Matías Gulf, with differences in the physical, ecological and fisheries characteristics. This study was developed in San Antonio bay, El Fuerte and Islote Lobos. Monthly samplings (October 2005-2007) in the...

Caracterización de playas de anidación y zonas de alimentación de tortugas marinas en el Archipiélago de San Bernardo, Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
Rincón-Díaz, M.P.; Rodríguez-Zárate, C.J..
The San Bernardo Archipelago, in the Colombian Caribbean zone, is well recognized for being a sporadic nesting and feeding area for the green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles. Due to the fact that the San Bernardo Archipelago has outstanding coral areas, marine grasses and sandy beaches and their environmental offers for the marine turtles have not been described yet, it was opportune to carry out this study between July and October of 2002. Thus, this research tends to fill this gap by describing the nesting beaches and feeding areas according to their geomorphologic and biotic aspects and, for the later areas, some oceanographic aspects too. Seven potential nesting beaches and 20 stations on feeding areas were evaluated to identify natural and...

Catfishes as prey items of Potamotrygonid stingrays in the Solimões and Negro rivers, Brazilian Amazon Biota Neotropica
Shibuya,Akemi; Zuanon,Jansen.
In spite of the fact that catfish have rarely been reported as food items in the diets of freshwater stingrays, they are commonly observed in the stomach contents of species inhabiting the Solimões and Negro rivers in the Brazilian Amazon. The stomach contents of six rays from the Solimões River and 64 from the Negro River were analyzed, and catfishes (distributed among the families Callichthyidae, Cetopsidae, Doradidae and Loricariidae) were found in the stomach contents of four and 10 of these rays, respectively, comprising a frequency of occurrence of 20%. These data indicate a relevant participation of catfishes in the diets of potamotrygonid rays in the Amazon, and may reflect the regional diversity and abundance of Siluriformes in the region.

Chemotaxis and chemical defenses in seaweed susceptibility to herbivory BJB
PEREIRA,R. C.; DONATO,R.; TEIXEIRA,V. L.; CAVALCANTI,D. N..
Recent studies have show that small marine herbivores with limited mobility (mesograzers) often feed on macroalgae chemically defended against fishes or sea-urchins. In order to verify the involved mechanisms of chemotaxis or chemical defense into this process in Brazilian littoral, two species of brown alga Dictyota menstrualis and Dictyota mertensii were studied against the limited mobility herbivores, the amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis and the crab Pachygrapsus transversus. These two species were studied in order to verify the action of their crude extracts in the defense and chemotaxis processes related to limited mobility of these herbivores. Feeding preference assays revealed that P. hawaiensis do not eaten these Dictyota species. P. transversus do not...

Comparaison de cinq indices alimentaires utilises dans l'analyse des contenus stomacaux ArchiMer
Rosecchi, E; Nouaze, Y.
Compound indices are often used in the analysis of fish stomach contents to characterize diet. Five of these indices, combining two or three measures of prey importance: weight, abundance and frequency of occurrence, are mathematically compared in this work. Data from a feeding study of sparid fish show that different indices can produce different results. Four classifications of food, in terms of preferences, are applied to Sparidae, compared and discussed. A new method of classifying the prey of fish into groups is proposed. It characterizes the main items in the diet, whatever feeding index is chosen for the analysis.

Comparative analysis of diet composition and its relation to morphological characteristics in juvenile fish of three lutjanid species in a Mexican Pacific coastal lagoon Neotropical Ichthyology
Aguilar-Betancourt,Consuelo M.; González-Sansón,Gaspar; Flores-Ortega,Juan R.; Kosonoy-Aceves,Daniel; Lucano-Ramírez,Gabriela; Ruiz-Ramírez,Salvador; Padilla-Gutierrez,Sandra C.; Curry,R. Allen.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this research was to investigate the differences in diet composition among three species of the genus Lutjanus inhabiting a coastal lagoon as juveniles. The working hypothesis was that these species feed on a common base of food resources and therefore, some niche overlap is present in terms of general diet composition. However, changes in the trophic niche with size and differences in some morphological traits among species explain observed differences in diet. Fish were collected during 42 sampling trips conducted regularly from February 2011 to January 2012 using several types of fishing gear. Total number of analyzed stomachs was 288 for Lutjanus argentiventris from 2.3 to 19.9 cm total length (TL); 178 for Lutjanus colorado...
